BY EWAN STEFANI
EWAN STEFANI lectures in electronic music at the University of Leeds in the UK. As a composer, his works have been performed on BBC Radio 3 and at various international sonic arts and computer music conferences. His works include acousmatic compositions, live electroacoustic performances, sound installations, radiophonic works, soundscape recordings, and compositions for a large synthesizer ensemble.
“The Astronomer” is developed from two of his previous works: Vermeer’s Mirror (2010), and Vermeer Kankare (2015), which are here re-imagined as an abstract musical interpretation of the painting by Johannes Vermeer of the same title. All sounds in the piece are derived from electronic and acoustic instruments recorded for the first work in the series. Sounds are composed into pitched ‘Klangfarben’ phrases which are then processed with spectral editing tools to distort and colour them. Finally, the completed phrases and textures have been resampled and remixed as part of an improvised live performance.
