NATHAN KELLY is an orchestrator working on Broadway in New York City. He has worked on The Color Purple, Legally Blonde, Curtains, and is currently assisting Tony-winner William David Brohn on upcoming projects such as All About Us and André Previn’s newest opera A Brief Encounter and Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. His compositions have garnered praise and enjoyed performances in the United States, Canada, and Europe. An award-winning concert pianist, he is a pianist on Broadway with The Phantom of the Opera (Broadway) and The Wedding Singer (Broadway), as well as accompanying Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli with symphony orchestras.
As an educator, he was an Adjunct Professor of Piano at The University of Texas’ Evening Division, a music theory lecturer and grader for freshman and sophomores at The University of North Texas, taught choir and low brass in three Texas public school districts (Hill Wood Middle School I.S.D. in Ft. Worth, St. Gabriel’s Catholic School in Austin, and Hill Country Middle School I.S.D. in Austin), and has taught private piano lessons for more than twelve years.
Nathan is currently continuing his studies at The Juilliard School in New York City (2006 – Present). He received his Bachelor of Music in Music Theory/Piano Performance (2001 – 2003) from the University of Texas at Austin, with additional honors credits from The University of North Texas (1999 – 2001). He interned at Walt Disney Music Studios in Orlando in the summer of 2001. He studied composition with Donald Grantham, Dan Welcher and Kevin Puts (U of TX); Joseph Klein, Paris Rutherford, and Cindy McTee (U of North TX); and Randol Bass (privately). He studied piano with Darius Pawlus (Rice University), Charles Allen (Michigan State), and Stephen Harlos (Dallas Symphony Orchestra). He also studied harp with Delaine Fedson (Austin Symphony Orchestra) and Ellen Ritscher (Dallas Symphony Orchestra). His conducting teachers include Maestro Peter Bay (Austin Symphony Orchestra), Professor Ryan Nelson (U of North TX), Anshel Brusilow (Dallas Symphony), and Kevin Noe of the (University of Texas Symphony Orchestra). He studied music theory with Jo-Ann Groom-Thornton, Gene Cho, and Paul Dworak (U of North TX); James Buhler, David Neumeyer, and Stefan Kostka (U of TX).
After graduation, Nathan traveled around the world for two years as a jazz pianist and arranger with Norwegian Cruise Lines and Holland-America Cruise Lines. He has accompanied several dance companies such as The University of Texas Dance Department, Ballet Austin, One World Theatre, Austin Dance Academy, American Ballet Theatre, Alivin Ailey Dance Company, Ballet Academy East, Broadway Dance Center, The Joffrey Ballet School, New York Theatre Ballet, The School of American Ballet, and The Rockettes.
